About this site and how we check facts

Iceland Trip Planner (working name) is an independent, English-language planning guide for self-drive visitors to Iceland. It is not affiliated with any government agency, rental company or tour operator.

Who runs this site

The site is run by Stefán Atli Rúnarsson, an Icelander. You can reach him through the contact page.

How we check facts

  • Every number is cited. Distances, fees, dates and climate figures link to an official or primary source in the numbered list at the bottom of each page. Our build refuses to publish a page where a number has no source.
  • Official sources first: Vegagerðin (Road and Coastal Administration) and umferdin.is, the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is), Safetravel (ICE-SAR), 112 Iceland, the Environment Agency, national parks, island.is and Visit Iceland.
  • Dated. Each page shows when it was last verified, and each source shows when we accessed it.
  • Our own calculations are labelled, such as the 30-year climate averages computed from Met Office station files.
  • When we cannot verify it, we leave it out: no fuel prices, hotel prices, rental prices, opening hours or northern-lights odds unless an official page states them.

Advertising

We plan to fund the site with clearly marked affiliate links. None are active yet. See the affiliate disclosure. Advertising never changes the safety information or the facts on a page.

Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences, credited on each image and on the image credits page.

Found an error?

Conditions in Iceland change. If a fee, rule or date is out of date, we want to know. Email [email protected], ideally with a link to the official source; see the contact page. How we handle your email is described in the privacy and cookies policy.

For live road, weather and safety information always use the official sources directly: umferdin.is, vedur.is, safetravel.is. In an emergency call 112.
