For the Ring Road, Golden Circle and South Coast a normal car is enough in summer [1]. Whether you need a 4x4 depends on the season and on whether you plan to drive the highland F-roads, and the insurance small print matters more than the daily price.

Which car for which trip?

PlanCarSource
Ring Road, Golden Circle, South Coast4x4 not required[1] [2] [3]
F1 F-roads (summer)Passable by general traffic in summer[4]
F2 F-roads4x4, very powerful cars or small SUVs; unbridged streams[4]
F3 F-roadsOnly large, well-equipped 4x4s / superjeeps[4]

Safetravel warns that not every 4x4 suits every F-road [5]. Rental contracts often say which roads a car may use; one rental company's terms, for example, exclude F-roads unless the car is approved for them [6]. Winter tyres and driving conditions: ask the rental company and check safetravel.is [7].

When do the F-roads open?

Highland roads open when snow and mud allow, typically in June or July, and usually close again from mid-September [8] [5]. Vegagerðin's figures for 2021–2025:

Insurance: what is usually excluded

Terms differ between companies, so read yours. As an example, one Icelandic rental company's terms say its collision damage waiver (CDW) excludes damage to the underside and tyres, water and river damage, damage from wind-blown sand or ash and wrong fuel [6]. And regardless of the policy, Safetravel states that no insurance covers vehicle damage while crossing a river [5].

  • Ask what the excess (self-risk) is for each type of damage.
  • Photograph the car at pick-up and return.
  • Check whether gravel, sand/ash and glass damage cover is included or extra.

The kilometre fee (from 2026)

From 1 January 2026 Iceland charges a kilometre fee of ISK 6.95 per km on cars and SUVs up to 3.5 tonnes [10]. Rental companies may charge it to renters, shown separately on the invoice without markup, or instead pay a daily fee of ISK 1,390 per started rental day for rentals of up to 30 days [10] [11]. Ask which model your company uses. Our calculator handles both.

Rules that catch visitors out

From Safetravel, the Icelandic Transport Authority and the Environment Agency:

  • Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on gravel and 90 km/h on paved roads unless signed otherwise [7]; they apply only in the best conditions [12].
  • Headlights on at all times; seatbelts for everyone; children under 135 cm need a car seat [7].
  • The blood-alcohol limit is 0.2‰ [7].
  • Hand-held phone use while driving is forbidden [12].
  • Off-road driving is illegal and punishable by fines or imprisonment [13].
  • Single-lane bridges are a known hazard: slow down and be ready to stop [7]. 29 remained on the Ring Road in 2023 [14].
  • Google Maps may not show road closures: use umferdin.is [7].
  • Sleeping in a campervan or car is only allowed at campsites or with landowner permission [15].

After a night flight, rest before you drive. The Transport Authority points rental drivers to "Nap and Go" options [16].

FAQ

Do I need a 4x4 in Iceland?

Not for the Ring Road, the Golden Circle or the South Coast, according to Visit Iceland. For F-roads you need a suitable 4x4: Vegagerðin grades F-roads from F1 (passable by general traffic in summer) to F3 (large, well-equipped 4x4 only). [1] [4]

Does rental insurance cover river crossings?

Safetravel states that no insurance covers damage to a vehicle while crossing a river. [5]

Can I sleep in my rental car or campervan anywhere?

No. Under Act 60/2013 it is illegal to spend the night in a campervan, caravan or similar outside organised campsites or urban areas without the landowner's permission. [15]
